McKenzy Cresswell underlined his happiness with his pre-season progress thus far ahead of his debut season in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost.
The 15-year-old graduates to Britain’s FIA Formula 4 series – the first step on the single seater ladder – off the back of a promising career in karting, first in the US before returning to the UK to compete in Junior Rotax.
He will race for Steven Hunter’s JHR Developments outfit in the season ahead, as well as being eligible to battle it out for Rookie Cup honours.
“I started out in America in Mini Swifts in the SKUZA Karts Championship, and then I moved back to the UK when I was 11, and then ever since then I was racing Rotax Junior in British Kart Championships and now at 15, I’m moving into British F4,” explained Cresswell.
“Yeah it’s definitely a big change but I’m enjoying it, I’ve adapted rather well so far. I’ve just been improving every time I’m in the car, and I think that we’re in a good way for the season.”
Cresswell has enjoyed a solid start to the year at the series’ official test days, most recently at Thruxton in which he posted the third-quickest time around the high-speed Hampshire circuit, which hosts the opening triple-header of the campaign on 08-09 May.
JHR have an enviable record at Thruxton in recent times, taking a clean sweep of victories – six from the last six races.
“It’s definitely gonna be exciting, but obviously I’m gonna be very nervous,” said Cresswell of his debut in car racing.
“It’s pretty much all straights so racing is gonna be very tight. The slipstream’s gonna be very important in qualifying, in the races. But, I’m really excited for it. I haven’t stopped thinking about it ever since I signed.”
Looking ahead, Cresswell explained his pragmatic approach to the opening events of the season, but aims to be fighting at the front before long.
“For the first two or three rounds I would say, just try and improve – learn as a driver, and just adapt to the new racing in cars because it’s very different to karts. It’s just gonna be trial and error to be honest but, towards the end of the season, I do want to be fighting for wins pretty much every round.”
