McKenzy Cresswell endured a luckless sixth event of the season in the GB3 Championship in partnership with the BRDC at Silverstone this past weekend (July 30/31), thankfully walking away without major injury after being involved in a sizeable incident in race two.
One week on from a thrilling trip to Spa Francorchamps which saw him score a maiden podium in the single-seater series, the Chris Dittmann Racing driver had hoped to build on his Belgium breakthrough.
Unfortunately, contact through Village towards the end of the opening lap in race two sent the 16-year-old into a roll before landing back on his wheels. Thankfully, Cresswell walked away relatively unhurt with just some minor bruising; however he was to be ruled out from taking the start of race three on medical grounds.
Prior to his weekend-ending accident, Cresswell was working through his usual programme of getting himself and his car dialled in during Thursday and Friday’s practice sessions, completing more than 105 laps across both days.
Lining up on the sixth row of the grid for the opening contest, the Motorsport UK Academy driver and BRDC Rising Star made a lightening start to move up two positions on what proved to be a frenetic first lap.
Settling into a groove, Cresswell - who is sponsored by Quenched Drinks and supported by Salt Recruitment - would drop a spot at mid-distance before holding station in 11th for the remainder of the seven-lap bout.
Sadly that was to be as good as it got for Cresswell with the incident in race two bringing his weekend to a premature end.
McKenzy Cresswell: “It has been a weekend to forget! I came here with high hopes after scoring my first podium of the season at Spa but things just haven’t gone our way.
“In race two I had made a good start and was going for a move around the outside of Village when another car came down the inside and pitched me into the air. I wasn’t expecting it at all so it’s left me a little shaken and with some bruising, especially on my legs.
“The most important thing is that I’ve walked away relatively unhurt and the car can be fixed. Still, it’s bitterly disappointing. My aim now is to rest up and now make sure we end the season on a high at Brands Hatch and Donington Park."
The penultimate event of the 2022 GB3 Championship in partnership with the BRDC takes place at Brands Hatch on September 10/11.
